Adventure Labs: Freedom Seekers of London Town

When you consider the term “freedom-seeking” alongside Maryland and slavery, what comes to your mind? The Underground Railroad? Harriet Tubman? Northern free states? Something else? It is most likely that you are thinking of someone or something having to do with abolition in nineteenth century. London Town was a colonial port town most active in the first half of the eighteenth century. As such, enslaved residents lived in a time after the explosion of laws codifying race-based slavery, but before an organized abolition movement. Before the American Revolution, there was no part of British America where slavery was illegal; enslaved people had nowhere safe to run to. Nevertheless, London Town and the surrounding area was home to several individuals who attempted to find freedom through flight. Take this tour to learn some of their history, the environment they lived in, and the tools that we in the modern day use to uncover their stories.

This adventure requires you to check in at the Visitor’s Center of Historic London Town and pay admission. Tickets are $11 for adults, $10 for seniors, $5 for children (4-17) and free for children 3 and under. Day passes to visit the site are available to be checked out at Anne Arundel County libraries.

Geocaching FAQs

It’s difficult to orient myself towards the stop just from looking at the map.

Wifi is spotty, and relying on GPS alone to navigate the site may be difficult. When trying to find your next spot, be sure to click on the “see details” button, you will receive directions that help orient yourself.

I am at the stop, but my location on the map is frozen, and I can’t unlock the challenge question.

Close the app and open it again. The progress you made will be saved, and hopefully the map will show your correct location.

Why do they want me to answer a challenge question?

The challenge question is designed to get you to engage with your surroundings. When you answer a challenge question correctly, you will get a prize in the form of a video or picture.

Do I have to be on site to access the tour information?

Yes and no. You can access information on each of the stops from anywhere. All you have to do is start the tour in the app and click on each of the red dots representing a stop. You do have to be onsite and within range of each stop to unlock the challenge question and earn your prize. Once you’ve earned your prizes they are always accessible.

I’m certain that I have the right answer to the challenge question but it’s not being accepted.

Adventure Lab is very particular with formatting. Make sure everything is spelled correctly, all numbers are in numerical form (i.e. it’s “1” not “one”), and when appropriate you have punction (i.e. it’s “Jr.” not “Jr”). There is a cheat sheet at the front desk if necessary.

I like self-guided tours but wish there was an audio option.

There is! Once you’ve downloaded the app and opened the tour, just click on the “Read to me” button to hear the content spoken aloud.
